On Wednesday, July 24, an event for U.S. members of Congress, their staff, and the media was held as an alternative to the address of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the U.S. Congress.

During the event CAP President and CEO Patrick Gaspard talked to Breaking the Silence Executive Director Nadav Weiman about the situation in Gaza, his experience as a former IDF soldier in the West Bank, and what brought him to break his silence and become an anti-occupation activist.

The event which was moderated by Win Without War Executive director Sara Haghdoosti also included talks with Palestinian and Israeli peace activists Aziz Abu Sarah and Maoz Inon.

conducted a tour and showed me where 64

innocent Israelis lost their lives and a

dozen hostages were taken she said when

you go back to the US please pray for us

post for us but also protest for us and

for me this is a kind of an affirming

protest also uh want to add that said to

me very clearly you need to help

Americans to understand that our current

government is not working towards peace

and is instead doing everything they can

not to be helpful uh to us in this

moment so that’s why I’m here uh thank

uh the first question I’m going to ask

I spent real time together on the ground

in hibron in the West bank I saw a

number of things that were deeply

traumatizing to me but as I saw them I

realized that you were being ret

traumatized uh you were experiencing all

over again I I I wonder uh as I Express

gratitude to you if you can give members

of the house and others who are gathered

here uh an understanding of your own

personal Journey uh how you uh decided

uh that you were going to become a

long-term activist for peace and that

you were going to be somebody who was

going to uh speak across difficult

everyone before I start I just want to

say that as an Israeli I think that the

number one goal of our government uh is

3:15

to release all of our hostages and bring

bring a ceasefire between us and and and

Gaza and enter humanitarian Aid inside

that’s the most important thing as an

3:25

Israeli to say at the moment um so for

3:28

your question I I became an activist

3:31

because I was a soldier in the Israeli

3:32

Army I’m 38 years old I served 20 years

3:35

ago and I served in the um Special

3:39

Forces Unit of the Infantry Naka Brigade

3:41

and me and my team were snipers and when

3:43

you serve as a sniper in the West Bank

3:45

and Gaza you are inside Palestinian

3:48

cities towns but more than more than

3:50

everything else you are inside

3:51

Palestinian homes almost every night we

3:54

did an operation that is called the

3:55

straw WID sto is when you take a private

3:57

Palestinian house and turn it into a

3:58

military post it means that you have to

4:00

storm the house in the middle of the

4:01

night drag all of the family members

4:03

from their beds and put them in one room

4:06

so they won’t bother us and then we put

4:08

our sniping rifles and me as the spotter

4:10

of the team I would put my thermal

4:12

camera in one of the rooms then we start

4:14

scanning the city and during that time

4:16

if one of the family members wants to

4:18

eat to drink to take medicine to go to

4:20

the bathroom they need authorization

4:21

from us because it’s our house it’s not

4:23

their house anymore and STW could be 2

4:27

hours or 4 hours or 6 hours or two days

4:31

right and after that ends we just take

4:33

all of our weapons and everything and we

4:34

go back to the base and when we go back

4:36

to the base the first time we did it I I

4:39

I understood that we ruined the

4:41

Palestinian family’s life not because we

4:43

had information not because we want to

4:44

shoot at someone because they thought us

4:46

this is a routine operation you have to

4:48

be with your sniping rifles inside the

4:49

Palestinian City and I was brought up on

4:52

the idea that they have to protect

4:53

Israel but what am I’m what I’m doing in

4:55

the Israeli Army is protecting Israel

4:57

and that wasn’t protecting Israel that

4:59

was rolling Palestinians and that’s a

5:01

different thing Al together so you ask

5:03

me how I became an activist I served in

5:05

the IDF and and I think that as an

5:07

Israeli we have the moral obligation to

5:09

speak about what we did over there it’s

5:11

not a secret that belongs to me as a

5:13

soldier or as an Israeli something that

5:15

everybody should know that is happening

almost every night St WIS like I did but

5:20

every day we have checkpoints and

5:22

Palestinian giving permits and now

5:24

fighting in Gaza and arrest it’s a

5:27

ongoing occupation of 57 years

I’m going to ask you uh in a moment

about Gaza and how we ended up where we

5:35

where we were at and what perceptions

5:36

are on the ground uh but I want to go

5:39

back to something that you said to me

5:41

when we were um together uh in hion you

5:44

said uh that the mission that you had

5:47

was to continuously mow the lawn can you

5:50

help us understand what it means to mow

5:51

the lawn and the and the purpose of that

5:54

and the psychology of it yeah so so as

5:57

soldiers were getting commands to do all

5:59

kinds of operations but one of the main

6:01

commands that we are getting is IDE of

6:02

soldier it’s called making a presence

6:04

felt what does it mean making a presence

6:06

felt so all of the Palestinians would

6:07

know who controls them throw a stun

6:10

grenade in the middle of palestin

6:11

Village in the middle of the night or

6:13

buil a a makeshift checkpoint so

6:16

Palestinians won’t know if they need to

6:17

go through two checkpoints or 10

6:19

checkpoints on their way to work or to

6:21

school or to the grocery shop and stop

6:24

Palestinians and taking their IDs and

6:25

question them and by the way now we have

6:28

a new system it’s called the W back it’s

6:30

a facial recognition system it means

6:31

that I’m stopping Palestinians they take

6:33

a photo of their face with a cell phone

6:35

and an app tells me what to do if to

6:37

detain the Palestinians or to let them

6:39

go right so Mo the on it means that all

6:42

of the Palestinians all of the time

6:44

should understand that the idea controls

6:46

them doesn’t matter if it’s a nurse from

6:48

a hospital if it’s a 14year old kid or

6:50

if it’s a construction worker all of

6:52

them would feel out

6:55

control the um uh I I I recognized that

6:58

as you took up your advocacy and your

determination to bring heon to Tel Aviv

in your own words uh that you yourself

has have been under all kinds of

7:07

surveillance and attack uh and I’m just

7:09

impressed with how steadfast you’ve been

through all of that but you’ve also uh

7:14

and the people of Israel have also been

7:15

steadfast through uh the astonishing

7:18

horrific attacks on October 7th I want

7:20

to talk about October 7th uh and Gaza

7:23

and where we’re at now I I understand

7:25

that uh on October 7th in U inclusive of

7:28

the 1200 Israelis uh who were uh who

7:32

were killed uh you lost a personal

7:34

friend that day as well I I wonder if

7:36

you can speak uh to that and um your

7:41

reaction to the aftermath of that attack

7:46

uh and your sense of the collective

7:48

punishment that the people of Gaza have

7:50

now been subject to yeah so so first of

7:53

all on October 7th lot of us lost our

7:56

loved ones and like and I I I think

8:01

basically every Israeli knows somebody

8:03

that was murdered in the Nova festival

8:05

or one of the kibutz or one of the 350

8:08

soldiers that died in the first couple

8:09

of hours of the attack right um so uh I

8:14

served in a special forces team and my

8:16

officer my officer my commander from the

8:18

Army the day I finished my Army service

8:20

he called me and said nadav I know you I

8:21

know your political views I just joined

8:23

an organization it’s called breaking the

8:25

silence or fighting the occupation you

8:26

should join and I hang the phone in his

8:28

face because I told him no no no I want

8:30

to go to South America to forget about

8:32

everything but he didn’t let go he

8:34

didn’t let go and eventually I joined

8:36

breaking a silence and he was my mentor

8:38

in all of my first months in Breaking

8:39

the silence and and he was a resident of

8:42

kibuts ber and and he defended the

8:45

kibuts he was a part of the First

8:47

Response Unit in the kibuts for seven

8:49

hours until he ran out of ammunition and

8:52

and then they will they killed him and

8:55

and for me it was hard because it was my

8:57

mentor right but all also he was a man

of Peace Shaka was really a man of peace

9:04

and and and and felt Revenge I I wanted

9:08

to Revenge I was angry I was so angry

9:10

but as an activist couple of hours later

9:12

I understood okay no what I need to do

is we need peace right and we stop the

9:16

fighting over them so so that’s

9:19

something that I want our government the

9:20

people in Israel would feel the same to

9:22

turn that that bad energy to something

9:26

that that can bring us to a very good

9:28

point so you and I are reunited here at

the point of the visit of uh prime

9:34

minister Netanyahu uh to our Capital uh

9:37

it seems to me uh after being uh in Tel

9:40

Aviv and experiencing the massive uh

9:42

demonstrations that were organized by

9:44

the hostage families and then the

9:46

massive demonstrations for justice

9:48

organized by uh political opposition uh

9:52

it seems to me that the prime minister

9:54

is clearly on the back foot uh at home

9:57

and perhaps has a uh an agenda uh that

10:00

speaks to that challenge uh in Israel uh

10:03

but also to a set of of politics here

10:05

and and I wonder if you have a

10:06

perspective on that that you can share

10:08

with us yeah so so first of all we need

10:11

we need to put everything that happened

10:14

with Gaza at the moment in context in

10:15

that context is that the main conception

10:18

of Israel that Benjamin nany is is the

10:20

leader of it is managing the conflict

10:22

this is how we call it we can build a

10:24

huge wall around the Gaza Strip and we

10:27

can do military operations after a

10:28

couple of years giving Palestinians

10:30

humanitarian permits and that’s it

10:32

everybody would forget about the

10:33

occupation and we can do the Abraham

10:35

Accords and speak and normalization with

10:37

the with the Muslim world and and that’s

10:40

it and that

10:41

exploded very bloody and and harsh on

10:44

October 7th right that that our milit

10:48

military strengths and Technology they

10:51

they won’t stop it right and that’s why

10:54

immediately we start seeing the

10:55

demonstration in Israel right in t Aviv

and jus and in and beeva and those

11:01

demonstration got bigger and bigger and

11:03

every week every every Saturday I’m over

11:06

there right and there are tens of

11:07

thousands of Israelis that are calling

11:09

for ceasefire now and releasing our

11:12

hostages before anything else so when

11:14

Benjamin comes over here to Washington

to address Congress he’s not

11:18

representing the people of Israel that’s

11:20

something that we have to understand the

11:21

majority of Israelis and all of the

11:23

Pauls shows it we want a ceas far and we

11:26

want our hostages home I think that you

11:28

know as as the prime minister

11:29

he needs to defend us the citizens right

11:33

I was a combat Soldier I know that you

11:34

don’t you don’t leave anyone behind also

11:36

an Israel citizen I know that our

11:38

government need to take care of us and

11:40

I’m also a Jewish man that I know that

11:41

every life matter right and Benjamin Nan

sees himself and his political way he

11:48

wants power right and that’s why this

war prolongs right n nine months we are

inside the war so what he’s doing what

he comes to do over here is exactly that

right is is is addressing the rightwing

voters in Israel more than the two house

of for of Congress we saw his government

right we have an extreme right-wing

government in Israel and he’s afraid

because if he will do a a ceasefire and

and and uh releasing our hostages it

means that the extreme rightwing parties

would leave his government right smri

war goes on and on and

rather devastating I I want to go back

to the West Bank uh with you Nadal um at

some point uh during our tour you took

me up on a hill and you said very

clearly you cannot understand the

conflict you can’t understand um the

12:45

circumstances in the occupied spaces

unless you appreciate both demography uh

12:52

and uh geography uh and as we you know

12:55

round our way uh through uh hibron it

12:58

was extraordinary to experience the kind

of Park a par Park marked map uh where

13:05

uh uh Palestinian territory uh was

13:08

absolutely uh broken up and not uh

13:10

contiguous at all and I and I wonder if

13:12

you can help us understand what is going

13:14

on what exactly this means particularly

13:18

uh on the heels of the uh IDF uh

13:20

civilian uh Administration approving the

13:23

largest land seizures last week since

13:26

the oso cards I I should also note uh

13:29

that uh as I uh visited communities in

13:32

the West Bank I arrived uh hours after a

13:35

United Nations sponsored school had been

13:38

bulldozed uh and after the homes uh of

13:41

uh uh activist peace activist families

13:43

had been bulldozed and were still

13:45

smoldering uh and there were children

13:47

gathered up on a hill who did not know

13:48

where they would sleep that evening what

13:51

on Earth is going on here yeah so first

13:53

of all we have to remember that we have

13:55

a government in Israel that in their

13:57

guidelines it says that only the Jewish

13:59

people has the right to

14:00

self-determination inside Israel and

14:02

they are actively actively working for

14:05

annexation so that’s our government

14:07

right and and um s settlement expansion

14:13

it’s it’s it’s it’s only one of the

14:14

things because we are in a

14:15

record-breaking time now in Israel

14:17

Palestine right it’s the most amount of

14:19

settler violence that we ever saw right

14:22

the biggest seizure of of Palestinian

14:24

land since the oso occurred but also the

14:27

most amount of unauthorized Outpost that

14:29

were retroactively approved by our

14:31

government right and it’s they’re

14:33

illegal also in Israel eyes right and

14:36

and and and and and what you mentioned

14:39

when we were in the South bbor Hills

14:40

area so a couple of years ago the state

14:42

of Israel and the settler movement the

14:44

the they correct the system right you

14:46

don’t need to build a big settlement

14:48

with lots of families and kindergartens

and all of that no no no you take one

family it’s a ship Herer unauthorized

Outpost in a remote area we were in the

South Eon Hills area a desert area and

it’s like four or five people but 200

heads of cattle or goats or sheeps and

then they get hundreds and sometimes

thousands of dunams or acres to go

around with their ships and we the

soldiers we have to protect them does

matter where they are going and they are

very very violent in the last 15 years

most of the settler violence are from

that ship headers Comm um unauthorized

Outpost and we were in Zan right Zuta a

cave dwellers Community a Palestinian

cave DW community in the South Eon Hills

that was abandoned after October 7th

because the settlers took advantage that

15:35

all of the eyes of the world and Israel

were on Gaza or or on Lebanon and they

15:40

unleash settler violence and Zuta was

15:43

the largest cave dweller community that

15:45

fled they left why because settlers were

15:48

very violent toward them from the

15:50

unauthorized Outpost next to them IDE of

15:52

soldiers protected the violent settlers

15:55

right and the community left about 400

15:57

adults and couple of hundreds of goats

and sheeps the largest one and 18

communities left fled since October 7th

right so this is our government that

wants to make the Oslo Accords disappear

right using settler violence and and we

have to remember settler violence or the

settlement it’s not something that it’s

detached from Israel it’s a part of the

policy if I’m as a soldier I’m not

allowed to enforce law on violent

settlers it means that settlers are or

violent settlement settlers are are a

16:29

part of the system are part of the

16:30

mechanism of the occupation right the

16:33

that that last point is is critical and

and we should Express uh thanks to our

Representatives here who pushed for

16:39

targeted sanctions against the extremist

uh settlers who were inciting uh this uh

16:44

this this violence and we we appreciate

16:46

their leadership on that front MAV you

they take their assignments very

seriously representative McGovern gave

us a clear assignment said that he came

here for some inspiration when I left

you uh in the West Bank I felt

incredibly inspired you’re talking about

difficult things here we were all

dismayed by uh the reality just last

week when the knesset voted uh down a

resolution for palestin for for

Palestinian statehood calling that an

existential threat to Israel despite all

17:20

of that what gives you hope what gives

you optimism what inspires you uh in uh

your engagement with Israeli and

17:29

Palestinians give representative

17:31

McGovern that that spark of inspiration

that he came here for so so first of all

17:36

I’ve got to say about the sanctions

right sanctions were a very important

17:40

step to show Israelis that impunity

17:42

doesn’t exist right that settler

17:44

violence is something that you need to

17:45

address and that was a very very

17:48

important step right I don’t want Israel

17:50

to be sanctioned I don’t want to be

17:51

isolated but it was

17:54

uh like everybody said today like we are

17:57

allies right when I fought in in Gaza I

18:01

had an M4 and it was engraved on the

18:03

side property of US Government right but

18:06

that’s only part of that friendship the

18:07

other part is saying whoa stop right and

18:10

we need to go to the next phase of uh of

18:13

of sanctions and and and and I’ve got

18:15

I’ve got to say something like I’m doing

this for the past 12 years right talking

18:18

with Israelis and international and

18:21

there’s something that I understood you

18:24

understood quite quickly I gotot to say

that when you speak the truth and when

18:28

you take respons responsibility like

what breaking the silence we’re taking

responsibility of what we did saying to

18:33

the Israel Society to the world this is

what we’re doing right we need to

18:36

address this and when you speak truth to

18:39

power in front of human beings they

18:41

understand that and that gives me power

every gives me energy every week when I

18:46

meet Israel it doesn’t matter if we

18:48

argue or not if we agree or not the

18:50

conversation exist and we can see what

18:52

happened with the liberal Democratic

18:54

camp in Israel or with the

18:55

anti-occupation Block in Israel gets

bigger and bigger because people

18:59

understand that we cannot be an

occupying power forever right 57 years

The IDF says it killed Hamas’s economy minister in an airstrike in the Gaza Strip yesterday.

According to the IDF, Abd al-Fattah al-Zari’i also served as an operative in Hamas’s manufacturing division.

The IDF says the manufacturing division works to “increase Hamas’s weapons capabilities, including by exchanging information with other terror organizations across the Middle East.”

Al-Zari’i, according to the IDF, played a “significant role in directing Hamas’ efforts to seize control of humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip” as well as manage Hamas-controlled markets.

Additionally, he was responsible for the distribution of fuel, gas, and funds for “terror activities,” the military adds.

Israeli minister Bezalel Smotrich has said letting two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip die of hunger might be “justified and moral”.

Speaking at a conference hosted by the Israel Hayom outlet on Monday, he expressed support for blocking aid to the Gaza Strip but said Israel lacked international legitimacy to do so.

“We are bringing in aid because there is no choice,” the far-right minister said, according to the Times of Israel.

“We can’t, in the current global reality, manage a war. Nobody will let us cause two million civilians to die of hunger even though it might be justified and moral until our hostages are returned,” he added.

He said that Israel needed “international legitimacy for this war”.

For nearly 10 months, the Israeli military has imposed a tight siege on the Gaza Strip, extremely limiting the flow of life-saving essential food and medical items.

Aid delivery is scarce, unprotected and restricted.

In June, independent UN investigators said Israel was using starvation on the Palestinian population as a weapon of war.

The hunger crisis has led to the death of dozens of people due to malnutrition, mostly children.

A high risk of famine persists across the Gaza Strip as almost the entire population faces high levels of acute food insecurity or worse, including half a million suffering starvation, the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) said in June.

Smotrich is one of many Israeli ministers and officials who have made statements described as genocidal against Gaza’s Palestinians since 7 October.

On 9 October, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel was fighting “human animals” as he announced a “complete siege” on Gaza.

“There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed,” Gallant said.

Other ministers and officials have advocated using a nuclear bomb on Gaza, turning the enclave into a “slaughterhouse” and “erasing the Gaza Strip from the face of the earth”.

South Africa said these statements are evidence of genocidal intent in its ongoing case at the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.

Israel denies the accusation of genocide.

Smotrich has also been accused of making genocidal statements about the occupied West Bank.

In March 2023, he said the Palestinian village of Huwwara near Nablus “needs to be wiped out”.
